The first edition was so well received that we have decided to leave the main structure of the book essentially intact. Various updatings and minor revisions have been undertaken and, in addition, a new chapter, entitled 'Facing the Future', has been added. In spite of the economic recession which has in the recent past plagued so much of the world, Indonesia has continued to forge ahead. She has not escaped unscathed from that recession, but through prudent management she has stayed very much on course. Plenty of potential global political and military perils remain on the horizon; but the signs suggest that wise leadership can enable Indonesia both to retain her national integrity and to persist with her ongoing process of economic and social development. With this new edition, as with the previous one, I am indebted to far too many people to enumerate them individually here.
