The success of the first edition of Emerging Indonesia has prompted Donald Wilhelm to return five years later to see what changes have taken place in the world's fifth most populous country. The result is a whole new chapter entitled 'Facing the Future' and the inevitable revisions and updating — but the main structure of the book stands basically intact. Despite an increasingly high profile Indonesia still remains an enigma, especially in the West.
It's a question of making the 'old' — Indonesia's traditions and customs — compatible with the 'new' — her dramatic economic and social progress since independence. Professor Wilhelm traces her history in his initial chapters expanding with the passing of time to look very closely at critical political events in the last 40 years. His purpose is to show how Indonesia has initiated a dynamic pace of development to reconcile her past with her future. The Author explains the contemporary situation of a complex nation. clearly and succinctly. Individual chapters cover matters such as national ideology, culture, foreign investment, industrial/agricultural development, transmigration, and the problems of youth and human rights. He finds that despite political perils and the world economic recession, Indonesia has continued to forge ahead.
Donald Wilhelm's deep and wide-ranging knowledge of Indonesian affairs, and his access to leading statesmen, ambassadors and academies, make him especially well qualified to present Indonesia to the Western reader. Emerging Indonesia is an invaluable, highly informed, yet very approachable study of a nation in progress.

My publishers and 1 take pleasure in presenting a new and revised edition of Emerging Indonesia. The first edition was so well received that we have decided to leave the main structure of the book essentially intact. Various updatings and minor revisions have been undertaken and, in addition, a new chapter, entitled 'Facing the Future', has been added.
In spite of the economic recession which has in the recent past plagued so much of the world, Indonesia has continued to forge ahead. She has not escaped unscathed from that recession, but through prudent management she has stayed very much on course. Plenty of potential global political and military perils remain on the horizon; but the signs suggest that wise leadership can enable Indonesia both to retain her national integrity and to persist with her ongoing process of economic and social development.
With this new edition, as with the previous one, I am indebted to far too many people to enumerate them individually here. I must, however. a special debt of gratitude to Admiral Richardus Subono, Indonesia's former Ambassador in London; to Jeremy Greenwood, my Editor; to Geoffrey Palmer, another long-standing friend; and to Lord Remnant and colleagues at Ultramar PLC for timely logistical support. As before, any errors of fact or interpretation rest with me alone.
